Entomology Workshop, 23 -29 November 2003, Jamaica

5th ISSCT ENTOMOLOGY WORKSHOP

JAMAICA, WEST INDIES
23-29 November 2003

“Pest Management – New Techniques”

The 5th ISSCT Entomology Workshop was held in Montego Bay, Jamaica, from 23 – 29 November 2003 and was hosted by
THE SUGAR INDUSTRY RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF
THE SUGAR INDUSTRY AUTHORITY OF JAMAICA

with the collaboration of :
Natural Products Institute University of the West Indies, Department of Life Sciences.

 Programme-Report – 5th ISSCT ENTOMOLOGY WORKSHOP JAMAICA, WEST INDIES 23-29 November 2003

The Workshop was designed primarily to look at new techniques in pest management – including techniques developed for other applications but which might be adaptable to sugarcane growing.

Sugar industries worldwide have been in the forefront of the move away from heavy reliance on chemicals in pest management. Some of the best examples of Integrated Pest Management have evolved in sugar, which has had to adopt, sometimes out of necessity, more environmentally friendly and sustainable approaches.

Discussions focused primarily around the following topics:

  • New techniques and products in pest management
  • The role of variety selection in sugarcane pest management
  • Advances in transgenics for sugarcane pest management
  • Mechanisms of resistance to pests in sugarcane
  • General Interest Papers

Processing Workshop, 8 -12 November 2003, India

ISSCT PROCESSING WORKSHOP

GOA, INDIA
8 – 12 November 2003

“New and emerging measurement, control and processing strategies for manufacture of quality sugar”

ISSCT PROCESSING WORKSHOP GOA, INDIA 8 – 12 November 2003

WELCOME TO INDIA

India has a cultural heritage that is over 5000 years old. It has a variety of religions, castes, traditions, art, literature, music, architecture and landscapes which blend together in a perfect harmony. India is the largest democracy and 7th largest country in the world with a population of nearly 1 billion people, covering an area of 3,287,263 sq km. Bounded by the Himalayas in the north, it stretches southward and at the tropic of Cancer, tapers off to the Indian Ocean between the Bay of Bengal on the East and the Arabian Sea on the West.

Sugar is the second largest agrobased industry in India. This year, a total of 18.5 million tonnes of sugar will be produced by about 434 sugar factories situated in different parts of India. About one million tonnes will be exported. With the liberalization and globalization of the Indian economy, the Indian sugar industry is poised for a rapid modernization and expansion.

Goa – the venue of the Workshop – , a tiny emerald land on the west coast of India, is situated between the borders of Maharashtra and Karnataka, the two leading sugar producing states of India. Goa was under the rule of the Portuguese for over 450 years. A very striking feature of Goa is the harmonious relationship among various religious communities, who have lived together peacefully for generations. Its golden beaches, scenic surroundings, medieval churches, ancient temples and friendly people have made Goa a favourite destination for travellers. For the same reason, Goa draws the largest number of tourist charter flights from the West.

The workshop will be held at Hotel Marriot Resort (Beach Resort) at Goa. This hotel is located overlooking the mouth of the Mandovi Rivers at the entrance of the Arabian Sea. The other facilities at the hotel are sports bar, pool bar, lobby lounge, business center, executive floor & lounge, health club, spa, tennis, squash, swimming pool and casino.

WORKSHOP PROGRAM AND THEME

The ISSCT Processing Section Workshop at Goa, India (8th to 12th November, 2003) will consist of a pre-workshop tour for two days to two sugar factories, followed by three days of presentations and discussion on the workshop theme. The theme will be:

ISSCT AGRONOMY WORKSHOP

Réduit, Mauritius
21 – 25 July
2003

“Opportunities in sugar cane agronomy to confront the new realities emerging in the 21st century”

Programme & Report – ISSCT AGRONOMY WORKSHOP Réduit, Mauritius 21 – 25 July 2003

Abstracts – ISSCT AGRONOMY WORKSHOP Réduit, Mauritius 21 – 25 July 2003

HOSTED BY THE MAURITIUS SUGAR INDUSTRY RESEARCH INSTITUTE AT REDUIT, MAURITIUS

The 20th century has shown the world to be very dynamic with the needs and priorities of the community changing at a faster pace than scientific and agronomic know-how. With such a record, it is certain that new realities, many of them not anticipated now, will rapidly emerge in the 21st century. To confront these new realities, the challenge will be to become still more productive per unit of land and that implies becoming more productive per unit of resources such as water supply, labour, fertilizer, herbicide and so on.

From this perspective, the Agronomy Section of the International Society of Sugar Cane Technologists organized a workshop at the Mauritius Sugar Industry Research Institute from Monday 21 to Friday 25 July 2003. The workshop devoted three days to discussion on the research needs to enhance and then sustain sugar cane productivity while keeping the environment clean. Field visits to the sugar industry in Mauritius were also organized.

Report – VIIth ISSCT PATHOLOGY WORKSHOP Louisiana, USA, 11-16 May, 2003

The VIIth ISSCT Pathology Workshop was held in Louisiana (USA) from 11 to 16 May 2003 and was hosted by the American Society of Sugarcane Technologists (ASSCT) in collaboration with the Louisiana State University (LSU) Agricultural Centre and the US Department of Agriculture Sugarcane Research Unit. The workshop was followed by a Post Workshop Tour in Florida (USA) from 19 to 20 May 2003

The Lousiana Sugar Industry has had a long tradition of strict disease control, having through its history experienced some devastating epidemics like mosaic and red rot. We at the ISSCT, owe a lot to such renowned plant pathologists from Louisiana as E. W. Abbott and C. W. Edgerton for their contributions to the science. The Workshop was thus a great opportunity to be at the heart of the science and was enjoyed by the 37 delegates from 15 countries.

“Energy Management in Raw Cane Sugar Factories”

ORGANIZED BY TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY BERLIN – BERLIN SUGAR INSTITUTE, GERMANY
&
MAURITIUS SUGAR INDUSTRY RESEARCH INSTITUTE, MAURITIUS

The ISSCT Engineering Workshop on “Energy management in raw cane sugar factories” was held at the Technical University Berlin, Berlin Sugar Institute, Germany, from Monday 7 to Friday 11 October 2002.

The workshop reviewed and discussed all aspects of energy management in raw cane sugar factories, with a view to identifying areas where energy demand could be reduced in order to increase the electricity generation leading to maximum derived revenue from factory operation, and where research thrusts would be of benefit.

The workshop involved three days of indoor sessions and two days of site visits.

The programme, list of communications presented and their abstracts can be viewed on this site.
